Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust installs Digital CCTV and DDA compliant Access

With a diverse range and age of buildings to operate from and manage across Birmingham and Solihull, the Trust needed some help.

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust needed to be able to look at any area of any site they were responsible for at any time from any networked PC on their IT network for both management, health and safety and security purposes.

The new digital CCTV system design was put together and publicly tendered; Custom Technology Solutions from Halesowen was successful in tenders proving their ‘best value’ approach worked every time not just as a one-off.

The installations needed experienced systems integrators in both networking technology, UTP transmission and digital CCTV systems. The installation was delivered with its ‘total project delivery’ package and completed in various stages on different sites over the last 3 years. Andy Marston, of CTS states, “the solution is fairly simple design for CCTV, but getting the signals transmitted around some split sites, between different building and installing through very old buildings where architectural features had to be maintained, and asbestos was a constant consideration for our installation teams. We conducted extensive surveys with the Trust before any work began and ensured our professionalism and the health and safety of our employees and those of the Trust were considered at all times.

As the work has progressed, we started to notice that some buildings we had worked on were going to be illegal with the enforcement of the Disabilities Discrimination Act coming in. So we mentioned the problem and recommended some solutions to the Estates Department and worked with them to change all intercoms on buildings to make them fully DDA compliant, normally with supporting video images enabling staff to see and hear who was at their door.

Most of the high and low security buildings operated by the Trust are now secured by CTS, and their access door systems are fully complaint with the changes required by the law. This demonstrated CTS as both a competent systems integrator, but also one that ensures all of its staff are proactive in support of their customer’s needs, and always advise accordingly.
